The Langtang Valley in Nepal springs to life as a vibrant heavenly Himalayan paradise with blooming rhododendrons that create the backdrop for stunning, crystal-clear views of snow-covered peaks. This 7-8 day trek does not require a long drive from Kathmandu and can take just over an hour; it has moderate trail conditions and encounters the Tamang culture as well as 360° of spectacular views that provide the perfect setting for the adventurous to experience the beauty of flowers in the spring without being crowded with others trekking this path at the same time. Although rated as moderate, this trek reaches elevations above 4,000m+, making it suitable for fit beginners wanting to experience authentic trekking in Nepal.

Why Spring for Langtang Valley?

Springtime is the best season, specifically March - May, for the valleys surrounding Langtang. At 120km north of Kathmandu, the valleys come alive during this time as they begin a rebirth after winter. The month of April brings clear blue skies that showcase Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Dorje Lakpa and Ganesh Himal in all their glory, with fresh snow to boot. On the Langtang Valley trek, the trails from Lama Hotel to Kyanjin Gompa will be surrounded by rhododendrons that bloom a variety of shades including shades of pink and red.

Advantages of Trekking in the Spring

  • Mild temperatures each day on the lower elevations (between 10-20°C) and cool nights (between -5 and 5°C)
  • Very little chance of rain during this time of year; most trails should be easy to walk on; less chance of encountering snow-related events (i.e. avalanche).
  • Less traffic from other trekkers compared to trekking on the trails to either Everest or Annapurna (peaceful experience).
  • Animals come out of hibernation including red panda and Himalayan monal.
  • Cultural festivals such as Losar (Tibetan New Year) occur in the nearby Tamang villages.

Compared to the bareness of fall, spring brings the added beauty of flowers blooming all around. Of the 20,000+ trekkers that travel to Nepal each year, there are generally an even number year-round since most trekkers prefer trekking during the spring.

Permit & Practical Preparation

  • Obtain permits either within Thamel or through the relevant agencies:
  • Langtang National Park Permit costs 3,000 NPR (approx $22 USD).
  • TIMs Card costs 2,000 NPR (approx $15 USD).
  • No restricted area permit is required!

Fitness and Health

  • Prepare for hikes by walking for 6-8 km per day (with an elevation gain of 500 m).
  • Try to acclimatize by resting on Day 2 in Syabru Besi.
  • Bring along Diamox to assist with altitude acclimatization (Tserko Ri max 4,984 m).
  • Receive vaccinations for Hepatitis & Typhoid prior to travel to Nepal and have adequate health/travel insurance in place that includes heli-evac.

Travel to Syabru Besi may be done via bus (approx 7-8 hours; Rs 800) or jeep (Rs 5000 per group), and hiring a guide (Approx Rs 30 per day) is suggested, although hikes can be done solo if you have a TIMS card!

Some tips on your family’s homestay:

  • Greetings: Tashi Delek.
  • Foods to try: sel roti (rice doughnuts) and chhurpi (yak cheese).
  • Respect: when walking around stupas, always circulate clockwise; use your right hand to give offerings (e.g., money, candy).
  • Holidays and Festivals: the spring holiday is Lhosar; the Tamang people participate in dance celebrations during this holiday (ex. photo).
  • Supporting the Tamang Communities: buy handicrafts and/or tip your porters enough to equal or exceed NPR 1,000.
