What if you could stand at the foot of the world's 10th tallest mountain (8,091m), surrounded by snow-covered summits in a matter of days, not weeks? The Short Annapurna Base Camp Trek is designed to make this happen. You will experience the beauty of the Annapurna area while enjoying a quick trek of 7-10 days. Busy professionals, families, or first-time trekkers seeking high altitudes without committing to a full 12-15 days of camping will love this trek. You will avoid the long, scenic roads to Phedi or Kande and experience the same spectacular attractions found on the longer trek beautiful rhododendron forests, Gurung villages, and stunning views of Annapurna I (8,091m), Machapuchare (6,993m) and Hiunchuli.

This shorter route has been designed with the intention of minimizing time away from work, by eliminating unnecessary detours. In addition, if you choose this shorter trek, you will not need to have any previous mountaineering experience to take part. As an example of a moderate-rated trek, you will be able to complete it provided you are in reasonably good physical shape.

This complete guide will provide you with all the information you need to plan a no-stress trek in Nepal, including itinerary and permit information, helpful tips for packing, and many useful insider recommendations for a hassle-free trek.

Why should you choose to do the Short ABC Trek?

The world-famous Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) attracts over 100,000 trekkers to Nepal yearly, but there is a reason this route is one of the most recommended. It is such an efficient and effective way to reach the fascinating beauty of the Annapurna area compared to the traditional route. The traditional ABC trek typically takes between 10-14 total days to complete the entire round trip from Pokhara, however the shorter variant allows you to access the trailhead by jeep or bus, eliminating the long initial walk from Nayapul.

Key Benefits

  • Time-efficient: 7-10 days long, closing off the 2-week Nepal travel itinerary.
  • Stunning View: 4,130m (13,550’) - 360° views of the Himalayas at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC).
  • Cultural Exploration: Pass through terraced farms, tabernacles, and ethnic Gurung and Magar villages where you can stay with the locals.
  • Flexible Season: Best visited in October-November or March-May. Lower seasons offer more peace & tranquillity.
  • Location: Accessed from Pokhara (adventure capital of Nepal). It gets frequent flights from Kathmandu.

It is the gateway to the Himalayan mountains. Trekking costs for locals and visitors is between USD 500-900, depending on the number in your group (4+). This price includes your permits, guides and teahouse accommodation, which is much less than what Everest Base Camp costs.

Essential Permits & Preparation

Your ABC trek will include some level of bureaucracy and paperwork. The requirements that must be completed in Pokhara or Kathmandu are:

- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3000 (approx. USD 22 per person).

- TIMS Card for independent trekkers: NPR 2000 (approx. USD 15). TIMS  Card through a trekking company is free (approx. USD 10).

- No requirement for a Restricted Area Permit for a short ABC trek.

Health & Fitness Preparation

1. Altitude: Peak elevation is 4130m (13,550’) and acclimatise at Pokhara at an elevation of 800m (2640’).

2. Vaccinations: Routine vaccinations include hepatitis and typhoid; medication for altitude sickness (Diamox) is optional.

3. Fitness Preparation: You should be prepared by training on the following:

  • Daily workout of 5-10km (3-6 mi.) hiking; using stairs and performing aerobic training.
  • Daily elevation gain of 500-800 m (1640-2625').

To ensure the safety of trekkers, it is necessary to hire a guide (NPR 25-35/day) or a porter (NPR 20-25/day), which can be done through any TAAN agency. After that, book your flights to Pokhara, which is approximately 25 minutes from Kathmandu.

Safety Tips and Common Challenges

Nepal trekking safety tips and common challenges include how to respect the mountains: 30% of people over 3,000 meters experience acute mountain sickness (AMS), which will cause headaches and nausea. When the AMS is severe, descend to a lower altitude or use oxygen, which your guide will carry.

  • Knee strain is a problem; be sure to use trekking poles and descend slowly.
  • If the trek is before the monsoon season, prepare for leeches by carrying salt or tobacco.
  • Boil all drinking water before using; use hand sanitizer after touching things at the teahouse.
  • Do a sweep for wildlife; you might spot some langurs but there are no snakes at elevation.

If you want insurance, a helicopter evacuation can be around $300. In an emergency, call 112 or your guide's satellite phone.

Cultural Etiquette in Gurung Villages

In Gurung villages, it's important to observe local customs to show respect for the people of the Himalayas; outdoor shoes should be taken off indoors and you need to use your right hand for eating food.

  • Use 'Namaste' for greetings and ask permission before taking photos. Help support the communities you visit by purchasing hand-made crafts and tipping your porter.
  • Leave No Trace, pack out all of your trash and do not use plastic bags.
